About our History

The Glen Ferris Inn has a story like no other accommodation in West Virginia.

The Inn subscribes to a rich history dating over 200 years ago.  In 1815-1816, U.S. Army Colonel (Retired) Aaron Stockton built his family residence on the banks of the Kanawha River overlooking the powerful Kanawha Falls.  While leveraging the Kanawha Fall’s hydro-power for milling, mining and logging enterprises, in 1839 COL (R) Stockton converted the family residence to also take on lodgers.   Thus, the Inn was born.

The Inn stayed in the family for decades, and due to its prime location on the East-West turnpike along the Kanawha River, now called the Midland Trail, the Inn hosted a prodigious number of famous Americans right from the history books.  These dignitaries included Presidents John Tyler, Andrew Jackson, Rutherford B. Hayes, and William McKinley, who as a Union Army Lieutenant Colonel occupied the Inn with his troops during the Civil War.

Over the centuries, the Inn has also hosted a Vice President, Governors, Congressmen, and even the famous naturalist, author, and inspiration for the National Audubon Society, John James Audubon, who wrote The Birds of America (1827–1839).  Perhaps the Inn’s most renowned client was the Great Compromiser himself, Henry Clay.  Clay was such a frequent visitor to the Inn that the room in which he usually stayed was called the “Clay Room” by the staff, and it is still available for visitors to enjoy today.

The Inn was remodeled in 1910 with the addition of classical columns and grand sweeping balconies that remain an attraction today.  In 1920, Union Carbide purchased the Inn and added a wing of several lodgings for its Executives to enjoy.  The Inn remained in the hands of Union Carbide as an active tourist hotel until 1981 when Union Carbide sold its metals division to Norwegian firm Elkhem.  The Inn continued to faithfully serve guests under Elkhem until it was sold to a local Glen Ferris couple, Dan and Becky Hill, in 1996, who faithfully stewarded this WV treasure for 21 years until selling to Tom Willis and HB Gilliam in 2017.

New owners, Brigadier General HB Gilliam and Major Tom Willis both West Virginia Guardsmen were drawn to purchase the inn due to the rich history and the fact that a military man and entrepreneur originally built it.  They were also impressed that so many Commanders In Chief have stayed at the Glen Ferris Inn some point in their careers.
